The Wild Heart of the Serengeti — Four Distinct Areas
The Northern Serengeti is where the Great Migration reaches its climax — the dramatic Mara River crossings that have captivated safari travellers for generations. But beyond the Migration, the north is also the most exclusive and wild corner of the Serengeti: private conservancies where night drives and walking safaris are permitted, exceptional leopard territories, and a landscape of rolling hills, rocky outcrops, and riverine forest that is quite different from the open plains of the south and centre.

The Mara Triangle
The Mara Triangle is the northernmost section of the Serengeti, bounded by the Mara River to the east and the Tanzanian-Kenyan border to the north. This is the most dramatic safari landscape in Africa — rolling grass plains descending to the riverine forest of the Mara, with the migration herds concentrated here during the northern movement (July–October). The wildebeest crossings here are the iconic images of the migration: thousands of animals pouring down muddy riverbanks into waters filled with crocodiles, with lions and hyenas waiting on the other side.
Best For
Mara River crossings (Jul–Oct), dramatic river photography, large predator concentrations
Mood
Raw and elemental — the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on earth

Lamai & Kogakuria
Lamai and the Kogakuria private concession occupy the northeastern corner of the Serengeti, between the Mara Triangle and the central Serengeti. This is one of the most exclusive areas of the park — private conservancy land where night drives and walking safaris are permitted, and where the vehicle density is a fraction of what you find at the Mara River crossings. The landscape is varied: rocky outcrops, rolling hills, and open plains. Lamai is also one of the best areas for leopard sightings in the entire Serengeti ecosystem.
Best For
Exclusive wildlife viewing, leopard sightings, private conservancy activities, off-season (Nov–Jun)
Mood
Exclusive and intimate — true wilderness with very few other vehicles

Klein's Camp
Klein's Camp sits in a private concession in the northern Serengeti, overlooking the Mara River valley from the Tanzania side. This is one of the most prestigious safari properties in East Africa — ten suites in stone cottages with sweeping views of the savannah, exceptional guiding, and access to some of the most wildlife-dense territory in the park. The camp's concession is exclusive: only two vehicles are permitted at any sighting, ensuring genuine solitude. During the migration season, the plains around Klein's fill with thousands of wildebeest.
Best For
Ultra-luxury, exclusive wildlife viewing, migration season, exceptional guiding
Mood
Indulgent and exclusive — one of Africa's finest safari experiences

Lobo & The Bologonja Valley
Lobo is the northernmost permanently inhabited area of the Serengeti — a rocky hillside outcrop where the old Lobo Lodge once stood, now home to a collection of smaller camps and the entrance to the Western Corridor. The Bologonja Valley below Lobo is a particular favourite of experienced guides: permanent waterholes draw elephants, buffaloes, and predators throughout the year. Lobo is also the transition zone between the northern plains and the woodland of the central Serengeti, making it excellent for varied wildlife. During the migration's northern movement, enormous herds pass through Lobo on their way to the Mara.
Best For
Year-round resident wildlife, elephant populations, varied landscape, quieter than the Mara Triangle
Mood
Classic and varied — excellent wildlife in a landscape with real character

Timing Your Stay
When Each Area Is at Its Best
July–October
Mara Triangle · Lamai · Klein's Camp
The Great Migration's northern movement — dramatic Mara River crossings, enormous herds concentrated in a relatively small area, predator action following the migration
November–December
Lobo · Lamai
Short rains bring new growth and the migration herds begin their return south through Lobo — excellent photography conditions and very few visitors
January–March
Lobo · Lamai · Klein's Camp
Dry season resident wildlife viewing — predators are excellent and the area is at its quietest. The migration calving is in the south, but the north offers superb year-round wildlife
April–June
Lobo · Lamai
Green season beauty — spectacular birdlife, excellent leopard sightings in Lamai, dramatic storm photography, and significantly lower rates at most properties
The Northern Advantage
Why the Northern Serengeti Is Worth the Journey
The Northern Serengeti requires more effort to reach and costs more to visit than the central or southern areas. But for travellers who want the most exclusive, dramatic wildlife experience in Africa, the north delivers without equal. The Great Migration's river crossings, the private conservancies with their off-road driving and night drives, and the exceptional leopard population make the northern Serengeti the pinnacle of East African safari.
- ✦The Great Migration's most dramatic chapter — the Mara River crossings are one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles
- ✦Most exclusive wildlife viewing in the Serengeti — far fewer vehicles than the central and southern areas
- ✦Private conservancies (Lamai, Kogakuria, Klein's) permit night drives and walking safaris unavailable elsewhere in the park
- ✦Exceptional leopard population — Lamai and Kogakuria are among the best leopard territories in Africa
- ✦Year-round wildlife: even outside migration season, the north has excellent resident populations
We recommend the Northern Serengeti for travellers who have been on safari before and want to experience the absolute best of what Tanzania can offer. The combination of the Migration season (July–October) and a stay in a private conservancy like Lamai or Klein's Camp creates an experience that is genuinely incomparable.
