Thousands of wildebeest on the Ndutu Plains in Tanzania's Southern Serengeti during the Great Migration calving season

Southern Serengeti Lodge Areas

The Ancient Rhythm of Life — Four Southern Plains Areas

The Southern Serengeti is where the Great Migration begins and ends — the calving ground where 1.5 million wildebeest drop their calves each year, and the departure point for the long trek north that has repeated itself for over a million years. It is also the most photogenic, most intimate, and most emotionally intense corner of the Serengeti: open plains that stretch to the horizon, a landscape that changes profoundly with the seasons, and wildlife density that rivals anywhere in Africa.

Ndutu & The Ndutu Plains

Ndutu is the small settlement at the southern edge of the Serengeti, where the open savannah plains of the national park meet the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is the calving ground of the Great Migration — approximately 8,000 wildebeest born here every day during peak season (January–March). The sight of thousands of newborn calves taking their first steps while predators circle is one of the most emotionally intense wildlife experiences in Africa. The landscape is open, rolling short-grass plains — endless sky meeting endless earth, punctuated by the distant silhouettes of isolated trees.

Best For

Wildebeest calving (Jan–Mar), cheetah sightings, predator action, intimate wildlife encounters

Mood

Raw and elemental — the ancient rhythm of life and death on the African plains

Kusini & The Southwest

Kusini (meaning 'south' in Swahili) is the southernmost permanent camp area in the Serengeti, located on the open plains south of the main Ndutu area. The landscape here is some of the most pristine in the entire Serengeti — vast, flat, short-grass plains with isolated granite outcrops and seasonal pans that fill with water during the rains. The area is particularly known for exceptional cheetah sightings: the open terrain with its small termite mound lookouts is perfect cheetah country. In the green season, the plains are carpeted with wildflowers.

Best For

Cheetah sightings, open plains photography, green season (Nov–Dec), genuine solitude

Mood

Vast and serene — the most remote feeling of any Serengeti region

Naabi Hill & The Southeastern Plains

Naabi Hill marks the main entrance to the Serengeti from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — a rocky ridge that serves as the transition zone between the highland ecosystem of the Crater highlands and the open savannah of the Serengeti plains. The southeastern plains extending from Naabi are dramatic: vast, open, with the distant backdrop of the Crater highlands to the south. During the calving season, the herds extend into this area, and it is also one of the best places in the Serengeti for fox (bat-eared fox) sightings.

Best For

Calving season (Dec–Mar), access from Ngorongoro, birdwatching, scenic drives

Mood

Expansive and scenic — framed by the distant Crater highlands

The green season transforms the Southern Serengeti plains into a lush emerald landscape — a dramatically different experience from peak dry season

The Green Season Plains

The green season (November–December and April–May) transforms the Southern Serengeti into a very different landscape from the dry season. The short-grass plains turn emerald green after the rains, wildflowers bloom in spectacular profusion, and the air is filled with the calls of migratory birds. The wildebeest are either just arriving or preparing to leave, and the predator density remains high. For photographers and nature enthusiasts who want a completely different Serengeti experience from the high-season migration, the green season in the south is profoundly rewarding.

Best For

Photography, birdwatching, green season landscape, lower rates, few vehicles

Mood

Lush and quiet — the Serengeti at its most beautiful and most peaceful

Timing Your Stay

When Each Area Is at Its Best

December–March

Ndutu · Kusini · Naabi Hill

Peak calving season — approximately 8,000 wildebeest born daily. Exceptional predator action as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas follow the vulnerable newborn herds. The most emotionally intense wildlife viewing in Africa

April–May

Kusini · Naabi Hill

Long rains transform the plains into lush green. Migratory birds arrive. Dramatic storm photography. Very few visitors — you may have entire areas to yourself

June–November

Naabi Hill

The migration herds move north and west. The southern plains are quieter, but wildlife viewing remains good with resident populations of zebra, gazelle, and predators

November–December

Ndutu · Kusini

Short rains begin. The landscape greens up and wildflowers appear. The first migration herds arrive from the north. Excellent photography conditions and very few other vehicles

The Southern Advantage

Why the Southern Serengeti Is Where Safari Began

The Southern Serengeti receives fewer visitors than the north or centre of the park, yet it offers wildlife experiences that are arguably more intense and more emotionally resonant than anywhere else in Tanzania. The calving season in particular is a profound experience — watching life begin on an epic scale, while the circle of predation that sustains the ecosystem plays out around you, is a reminder of why we travel to wild places.

  • The Great Migration's most intimate chapter — watching 8,000 calves born daily and the predators that follow the herds is one of the most emotionally powerful wildlife experiences on earth
  • Exceptional cheetah territory — the open short-grass plains of the south are perfect cheetah habitat, with some of the highest cheetah densities in Africa
  • Most dramatic landscape change across seasons — the transformation from dry-season golden plains to green-season emerald is one of Tanzania's great seasonal contrasts
  • Fewest vehicles in the Serengeti — even during peak calving season, the south is far less crowded than the Mara Triangle or central Serengeti
  • Access from Ngorongoro — the southern access route (through Naabi Hill) provides the most scenic entry into the Serengeti, with the Crater highlands as a dramatic backdrop

We recommend the Southern Serengeti for travellers who want to experience the Great Migration's most intimate chapter, or for those who want a Tanzania safari that is genuinely off the beaten path. The combination of calving season (January–March), exceptional cheetah sightings, and a dramatic seasonal landscape transformation makes the south uniquely compelling.
