January
Peak (Short Dry)
Verdict
One of the best months in Tanzania. The calving spectacle is extraordinary, crowds are lower than mid-year peak, and the weather is near-perfect for photography. If you want the Migration in its most biologically dramatic chapter — not just the river crossings — January is the month.
Wildlife
Wildebeest calving is in full swing on the Ndutu / Southern Serengeti plains — roughly 8,000 calves a day at the January peak. Predator density is at its annual maximum: lion, leopard, and cheetah hunting newborns. The predator-prey dynamic on the short-grass plains is the most concentrated wildlife theatre in Africa.
Migration
The migration herds are concentrated in the Ndutu area, straddling the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Around 1.5 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra are visible in a single sweep of binoculars from a high vantage point.
Weather
Hot and dry across the northern parks. Daytime 28–32°C, with cool mornings at 15–18°C on the Serengeti plains. Little to no rainfall; the short-grass plains south of Ndutu are bone-dry, which is exactly what makes them visible to predator and prey alike.
Crowd level
Moderate. Peak-season pricing is in effect, but vehicle density is markedly lower than July–September at the Mara River. The calving spectacle is still considered insider knowledge by many first-time visitors.
Costs
High season rates. Best Ndutu camps — Lemala Ndutu, Sayari Camp, Sanctuary Kichakani — book 6–9 months ahead. A 7-day mid-range safari in January starts from $3,800 / person.
Best parks
Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti are the primary destinations. Ngorongoro Crater remains excellent, with high wildlife density and dry, clear road conditions.
Insider tip
Focus on Ndutu, not the central Serengeti. The wildebeest calving happens on the short-grass plains south of the main park boundary, in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Stay inside Ndutu — a camp on the calving floor puts you within minutes of the action at dawn. See our full January safari guide for camp recommendations and a sample 7-day itinerary.
